Standard-ICAO Journey Log: The Journey Log is the key to tracking air time for maintenance purposes. The Standard-ICAO Journey Log follows the guidelines agreed by ICAO member states around the world such as the FAA, Transport Canada, Mexico's AFAC, and Europe's EASA. It's possible to keep track of air time using phones or tablets, but it's not possible to leave e-devices with the airplane at all times for use by the next pilot. This is where the use of an intermediate paper Journey Log makes sense. ICAO rules require that a record of air-time must be in the aircraft when in use, and that the record of air-time must be kept for 6 months after the last entry to guide the maintenance engineers responsible for certifying the aircraft. The remaining numbered fields are information that is required by other regulators, ramp inspectors, and the tax-man! Also, don't overlook that a current Journey Log is required by foreign immigration people on cross-border flights. Unlike Tech logs, Journey Logs can be recycled when they've done their job. They're not expensive and they make everybody's work a lot easier during the routine inspections!
